DAP Turns 30! Come and Celebrate With Us!

2009 marks 30 years for the Delaware Autism Program.

Come help us celebrate this milestone with a big celebration at the Brennen School on April 23, 2009.

School tours will be given from 9:30am to 11:00am. At 11:00am there will be a celebration in the gym. The celebration will include performances by several DAP students, speeches by staff and administrators as well as the PAC. A reception will immediately follow the celebration and school tours will resume as well.

Hilights are sure to be a slideshow of student & staff photos through the years that will run on a loop so everyone may enjoy it as well as a video that the vocational department is working on with some adults with autism who are current clients of POW&R (Productive Opportunities for Work & Recreation) which is Autism Delaware’s adult services division.

We look forward to seeing you on April 23rd!!

2 DAP Parents Run for Christina School District School Board Seats!

John Young, current Vice President of the PAC and Elizabeth Scheinberg, our Merry Otters Swim Coordinator are both running for open seats on the Christina School Board.

John is Dad to 8-year-old Evan who attends the DAP classroom at Downes Elementary and will be running for an open seat on the CSD School Board in district D.

John says he is simply answering the call of our new President to strive for “what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage” and that he has chosen his first foray into public service in support of the noblest cause: Education. John says he would be honored to have your vote for School Board member on May 12, 2009.

You can read more about John and his candidacy on his website at:
www.young4csb.com

Elizabeth is Mom to 7-year-old Delia who attends the DAP classroom at Maclary Elementary and will be running for an open seat on the CSD School Board in district E. She states the platform of her candidacy is based on her belief in a right to education, that students cannot learn without acknowledgement and adaptation to each child's individual learning needs, nor can they succeed without empowered teachers and competent administration. She believes that change is a top-down process, it must come from the policy-makers and the opportunity to effect change begins with the school board. Elizabeth also says it would be her honor to have your vote on May 12, 2009.

You can read more about Elizabeth and her candidacy at:
www.elizabethscheinberg.blogspot.com

We would like to point out that although we have 2 parents running for the school board, they reside in different nominating districts. Additionally, with the recent resignation of School Board President, James Durr, there are two open seats on the board.

RSVP to the May 12, 2009 vote by visiting the event page on Facebook HERE

'08/'09 PAC Meeting Schedule

April 22nd: PAC Meeting

The PAC will welcome Mr. Ray Brouillette from Easter Seals who will discuss the
Camp Fairlee Summer Camp and specifically the “Autism Only” weeks that they host each year.
We will also be welcoming Ms. Gail Stein and Meghan Evans from Variety, the Children’s Charity of Delaware who will discuss the autism day camp that they host at Camp Manito in North Wilmington over the summer. This is a great time to get lots of information about these two camps. Even if you don’t plan to send your child to camp this summer, come to arm yourself with the information to get on their sign-up list early for next year. Summer camps for special needs kids fill up fast so it’s important to make decisions early in the season. These folks will help you decide what’s best for you and your child.

As always, childcare is free of charge for students and siblings.
Space is limited so email Val now to reserve your spot.
