New To DAP? Wondering, "Now What"?
The New Parent Binder is a Must Have!
So, you’ve started your journey through the wild world of autism. You made important educational decisions having your child evaluated and enrolled at the Delaware Autism Program. Education...CHECK! But now what? What else is there to help parents navigate through the sea of information that relates to their child’s new or not-so-new diagnosis?
Several years ago a few parents decided to put together a packet of useful information and tips relating to their child’s new school and the community which they would hopefully embrace and give it to families with children newly enrolled at the DAP. This was all information that they wished they had when their children started at the DAP. This year Kim Herbert, mom to twin boys with autism took on the role of New Parent Mentor as well as the daunting task of revamping the new parent packet.
Well, Kim came through for the Parent’s Advisory Council (PAC) with flying colors turning the packet of information into a large binder chock full of useful information, facts, tips & tools. Anything and everything can be found in the new parent binder. From where to park when you come to school, how to navigate your IEP, applying for Disabled Children’s Medicaid to the plethora of services available to your child outside of the school setting.
Having 2 boys on the spectrum, Kim is a wealth of information and a strong leader in the autism community. Along with another DAP mom, Robin Delaney, she helps to run the reinforcer store which has been a runaway hit with the staff and the students. Beyond school she helps to plan social events for Autism Delaware for families with autistic children.
So, if you have a child who was recently enrolled at DAP and you would like a copy of Kim’s amazing resource guide, contact her via email at:
mommax2@comcast.net or leave a message for her on the PAC voicemail line at 454-2202 Ext. 650. She will see to it that a guide is sent home with your child ASAP.
