DAP Families

Together We Make A Difference

PAC Committee Updates

Offsite Parent Committee:  A meeting wbetween this committee and DAP administrators took place in early March to discuss priorities.  Admin agrees that more in-servicing of host school staff needs to take place and that communication could be greatly improved between staff and admin regarding accessing age and learning level appropriate teaching materials for offsite students and teachers.  Committee contact: j.montanaro@yahoo.com

Calendar Committee: Receommendations by both committee chair, Mandi Duffy and Principal, Dr. John Dewey to have full educational days for December 22nd & 23rd during the '08/'09 school year were considered and aggreed upon by the district calendar committee.  Committee Contact: mandiduffy@yahoo.com

After School/Summer Programming Committee:  The Brennen school's  pilot after school program ran from about mid-April until the end of the school year serving about 11 students.  The program went famously and parents who participated were thrilled with the staffing and activities.  Aplications for the upcoming '08/'09 school year will be coming home soon.  A huge "THNK YOU!" to Variety-The Children's Charity for completely funding our ater school program.
Variety also held an autism summer day camp in August between summer session and the new school year.  It was held at the United Cerebral Palsy's Camp Manito in Wilmington and summer fun was had by all.

Legislative Committee:  Committee Chair, Deanna Principe continues to meet with ASD Legislative Committee member, Denise Bradley to discuss issues and combine efforts.  Among the topics discussed were Air Conditioned busses for the summer program, cameras on special needs busses, obtaining a 2nd nurse position at the Brennen School and a 4th and ideally a 5th Assisitant Principal position.  One of which would be solely responsible for the Residences.  PAC and ASD will continue to combine their efforts. deannap203@comcast.net

Be a part of history!  Nearly 30 years ago parents just like you fought for their children and won.  It was largely the efforts of parents who lobbied the DOE to start the DAP and here we are, 346 families strong and growing.

Over the last 2 years, the PAC has come alive and more and more parents are realizing that when we all stand together, we can make things happen.

Look at what we've been able to accomplish in such a short time...An after school program started in April, 2008.  This was attempted multiple times in the past by outside agencies and administrators but it was parents who made it happen.  We were offered a seat on the District Calendar Committee.  This is unprescedented!  We now have a say in what our calendar looks like in coming years.  All from one 3 minute speech at a school board meeting by a parent.  Offsite parents are banding together to make their special needs known and tackle them head on.  Parents are taking part in a statewide task force to address the lack of a long-term plan for DAP.  Again, an unprescedented event.

All of this is good news for PAC and great news for our kids and all the kids that will come to DAP after them.  So, join a committee.  Volunteer your 1 hour a month or 20 hours a month to work on important issues that will make positive lasting changes for your kids.
